intriguing ibadan
this city is alive with beautiful and friendly people, endless street vendors, fantastic food, unregulated traffic and one hell of a market. so different than the north but equally captivating.

spent the night in the big, bustling, affluent capital of nigeria...abuja. due to a flight cancellation we only arrived yesterday and must leave today, so we did not get an opportunity to explore, other that the car ride through. seems like it may be a place to look up should i return. on our way to ibadan in a few moments! looking forward to seeing what photo opportunities are there and learning more about the qualitative studies going on by our team!

we went for a wee wander this afternoon...through little villages and about. fabulous trees here...surprisingly large and green given they had their first rain of 2012 last night (for about 20 minutes)!

a walk in sokoto country...
another magnificent day in this magical place!

streets of sokoto, nigeria
what a treat this city is! still being a muslim town it has all the charm one would expect when traveling in africa. i hope in my life time an opportunity will arise to return.

just got in from a great day in the O.R. the procedure did not end the way they had expected (the 'tumor' turned out to not be one, but rather it was a AVM (arteriovenous malformation) wherein the veins and arteries have massed together...in this patient's brain. this has caused her to go blind and wil require another surgery wherein she is under a general anesthetic (and NOT awake!). this is great news as it means this woman does NOT have cancer, but it does mean she will have to pay for an MRI and another surgery...but she will live to see her 5 year old daughter get much older. we will now wander the streets and get some photos of the great market displays here in Sokoto.

thanks to the greg wilkins-barrick chair we are here in nigeria and dr. mark bernstien is teaching awake crainiotomy to many doctors and residents. thanks to the two procedures that will take place tomorrow, two daughters will have their mothers in their lives still. one of whom is only about 5 years old. i met these women today and they are both so beautiful and strong, despite one of them having gone blind from her tumor (yup...the one who has the gorgeous young daughter).

to clear this up for everyone who may have missed the reason why i am going to nigeria:
a neurosurgeon i have come to know through my wee gallery on main street teaches awake brain surgery in the developing world. i will accompany he and three other women to nigeria to document their trip, the teachings and yes, the brain surgeries....and no, i am not terribly squeemish (which is good).
